Canned Apple Spice Cake (Cake in a Jar)

Hi everyone!

As we are going into fall and cooler weather is coming our way I decided to whip up some of these delecious treats for the pantry. They also make great gifts for the holidays. They have become a very popular item to send the troops in care packages!

In my experience these will last for several months if stored propery. We have never really had them around for much longer than that as they are very yummy!

This is another example of how to store food long term (at least to make it through the winter)!

Enjoy!

Resources:

Here is where I got the original recipe (credit where credit is due), lots of great info, some is a little over the top for me! -> End Times Report

If you don’t have the tools I show in the video they are really helpful you can get them here –> Canning tools

The Recipe:

Spiced Apple Cake in a Jar

Ingredients:

  • (24 oz) of apple sauce, or 3 cups of peeled, chopped apples.
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 cups flour (all purpose)
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Pre-heat oven to 325 F.

Combine all ingredients and stir until consistancy is ‘oatmealish’. With each jar, use your caning funnel to protect the sealing surface and spray some cooking oil into the jar to prevent the loaf from sticking. Fill each jar about half full (remember if you fill them to full, once baked, you will not be able to close them!). Bake at 325F for 30 minutes or until you can insert a toothpick and have it come out clean. When done, turn the oven off and remove one jar at a time, wipe the sealing surface, apply a simmered lid, and secure with a ring just finger tight. As the jars cool you will hear them ‘ping’. Store in a cool dry place.

When you go to eat one of these you may need to use a butter knife to loosen the sides. Cut in slices to desired thickness (1/2 is a good size) then either eat or lightly sprinkle with you favorite sweetner!

I hope you enjoy this post! Please feel free to make comments and share your own tips and tricks!

Cheers!

Willie

Make Your Own Instant Soup Mix (Cream of Chicken Shown Here)

Hi Everyone,

Here is a quick video on how to make your own instant cream of chicken soup mix!

I have always been a fan of these types of mixes for everything from cooking to a yummy sippin’ drink on cold days (watch your sodium intake though!)

I recently purchased some packages from the supermarket and was quite surprised at how expensive they were! So here is my attempt to recreate the cream of chicken style mix. Try it out and let me know how you like it! If you make modifications or have your own recipe please share in comments below!

Here is the recipe as shown if you would like to print it out:

NewAndLostCrafts Instant Cream of Chicken Soup Mix:

Makes enough mix to replace a store-bought packet or for a standard coffee cup (about 6-8 fl oz.)

 1 tsp chicken bouillon

1 tsp Non-dairy Instant creamer

1 tsp Instant mashed potatoes

Dash of Oregano or Parsley

Add ingredients to recipe as directed or for a warm drink add to hot water, stir and enjoy!

I hope you enjoy this! Cheers!

Mushroom Hunting and Foraging in the Colorado Rockies!

Hi Everyone!

I took me a while to compile this video but I think you will enjoy it!

We have a wealth of wild mushrooms that grow in the forest canopy around our home and I have been itching for someone who really knows what they are doing to teach us about them (as well as the other edible and medicinal plants which are numerous). We finally found the perfect person, Wendy Monroe of Native Medicinals!

We hired Wendy to spent a couple of hours with us,, and it was AWESOME! This video is my attempt at capturing the experience, Enjoy!

Lots of good information in the video but the personal experience was awesome. I highly recommend anyone out there who is interested in learning about their local plants/fungi  (which I suspect a lot of this audience is), GET A TEACHER! There are a surprising number of species which look very similar, some are yummy some are poisionous! Be safe please :)

Light a Hard to Reach Candle Wick, Sneaky Trick!

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick video to show you a handy way to light a hard to reach candle wick when you don’t have a long match, aim-n-flame etc…

Enjoy! And please share and comment!

In fact this works so well I have not purchased a long reach lighter in quite some time.

In the video I was using linguine, regular spaghetti does work better (or even better angel hair style). This can also be used to light the BBQ, lanterns, pilot lights etc.. Anything where things are hard to reach or your want to keep a little distance!

This also works great for using an oil lamp!

I hope you enjoy this!

Cheers!

Bicycle Tire Rubber Bands! A Great way to Re-Use!

Hi Everyone,

Here is a great way to keep those blown bicycle tires out of the land fill!

If you get creative in the way you cut these you can make a very wide variety of band sizes. These are great to stick in a baggie and in a kitchen drawer!

High Altitude Perennials, Raspberries and Blueberries!

Hi Everyone!

This is a pretty short video of my daughter and I planting our first perennials! The whole family loves raspberries and blueberries, and trust me, buying them from the store  in Colorado you pay for them dearly!

Raspberries grow wild where we live but you better pay close attention! A friendly bear, experienced local, or determined tourist clear out the wild ones pretty quickly!

Enjoy!

I actually took this video a while back and will take another to show how things are doing (great).

I have really been happy with our gardening efforts in general this year. It is a challenge where we live but we are learning it is still very possible!

If you have not yet seen them check out my episodes on container gardening, we are doing some really cool stuff there also!

Thanks for watching! Cheers!

Dehydrate Strawberries (Oven Method)

Hi Everyone,

Sorry, been a little slow on posts lately, but trust me,  not short on creating content! I just need to get it edited and uploaded for all of you to enjoy!

I made the following video because it seems like I see containers of strawberries in the ‘bargain bin’ a lot here in Colorado. They are just barely past their prime with maybe a few towards the bottom starting to look a little ugly. This is one thing you can do with them!

Enjoy the video!

A few more ponters!

– Keep the oven is a great way to dehydrate! Just keep a close eye on your product as heat is always involved.

– Store your result in an air tight container for best long term results. Oxygen absorbers are cheap and a good idea also.

– I made a similar video earlier, check that out also…  How to dehydrate using your oven (veggies)!

– Other interesting related posts: How to microwave corn on the cob, How long to microwave corn on the cob in husk. Other prepping for dehydration.

Please share your thoughts below!

Cheers!
